Creating a System to Stay In

Achieving my first doctoral class symbolizes not only an accomplishment but also an acknowledgment that I am creating the place where I belong.

There is no doubt that I love myself. But wow, I am in awe of the person I am becoming through this experience. I feel like I am watching a younger version of myself experience the world for the first time through all the senses, meeting whatever comes forward with curiosity and openness.

What this program has required of me is beyond anything I could have fathomed. It is not the assignments, readings, class discussions, or the hours dedicated to strengthening synapses. Instead, it is the sheer vulnerability this experience demands of me that has shocked me to my core.

I recall so many times when I wanted to run away or avoid the growth being asked of me. From speaking up to expressing my wants and needs, I have had to confront the ways I hold myself back. My voice never wavered when it came to advocating for others, but it was often a whisper when I spoke for myself.

In a recent assignment on personal leadership, I struggled to define my vision. All my iterations centered on others – except me. If there is one thing I have learned to my soul, it is that we can only change what is within our control.

What I can control is creating a life I want to stay in.

No more running.

No more avoiding.

No more abandoning myself.

No more.

The Power in Staying: An Exploration of Self and Systems shares my personal vision. Inspired by artwork gifted to me for my birthday, it reflects the leader I am and the leader I am growing into.
